Poker Hand Values

A lot of the mail I get here is for help in deciding which hands win or tie at the showdown. There is one quick rule to apply when comparing poker hands in Texas Holdem.

Take the Best Five Cards to Make a Poker Hand

It does not matter if the cards are from a person's hole cards or if they are board cards. It also doesn't matter if the person has "3 pair", since only five cards are used to make a poker hand.

Still, if you are unsure of how to rank a hand, feel free to get in touch.

Here are some examples of poker hands, and how to rank them:

Q:
Can you please tell me which hand wins:

Player A - J, 8

Player B - J,6

Table- 5,5,3,J,J

A:
Its a split pot. Both players have J, J, J, 5, 5 - a full house.

Each player uses the jack from their pocket cards, and the pair of jacks and fives on the board to make their hand.

Q:
Player A - 8,9

Player B - 8,4

Table……8,J,K,Q,A

A:
The best five card hand is: 8, 8, A, K, Q.

Its also a split pot.

Each player takes an 8 from their hole cards, and use the 8 on the board to make a pair. They then use the three highest cards to fill in their kickers. All of those cards (the A, K, Q) are shared community cards that are on the board.

Another example of breaking-ties in a poker hand. This time, the pots weren't split . . .

Q:
Player A: 8, A

Player B: 8, 9

Flop: 9, 8, 8, 2, 2

A:
The best 5 cards in this had are 8, 8, 8, 9, 9 held by Player B. He uses two eights from the board and one in his hand, a nine from the board and one from his hand to fashion a Full House.

Player A also has a Full House with 8, 8, 8, 2, 2, but is a lower ranking Full House.

Q:
Player A: 3, 3

Player B: 6, Q

Flop: A, A, 6, 7, 7

A:
The best hand is A, A, 7, 7, Q, held by player B.

Because we only use 5 Cards to make a poker hand, three-pair does not exist. So, neither Player B's 6, nor Player A's pair in the hole come into play.

Instead, we look at the values of the two pairs. They are the same for both players. Next we look at the value of the "kicker" card. Player B has a higher kicker with his Q.
