A
- Aces Full
- A full house with three aces and any pair.
- Ace High
- a hand with an Ace as the high card. For example, an Ace High Flush, or an Ace High Straight.
- Aces Up
- A hand that contains two pairs, one of which is Aces.
- Active Player
- a player who is still in the hand.
- Action
- Checking/Betting/Raising. A game in which players are playing a lot of pots is considered an "action" game.
- Add-on
- A purchase of more chips (optional) at the end of the re-buy periods in a tournament.
- All-In
- When a player bets all of their chips.
In online poker you may be deemed "All-in" when you are disconnected.
- American Airlines
- Two Aces in the hole.
- Ante
- Money placed in the pot before the hand begins.
B
- Bad Beat
- When a substantial favorite is outdrawn by a large underdog, the player is said to have taken a Bad Beat. Also, when a very strong hand is beaten by an even stronger hand, this is sometimes called a Bad Beat. Poker Rooms sometimes have Bad Beat jackpots set up to reward players in the latter scenario.
- Belly Buster
- A draw and/or catch to an inside straight.
- Bet
- to place chips into the pot.
- Bet the Pot
- When a player bets the amount of the pot.
- Bicycle
- A straight that is A-2-3-4-5.
- Big Blind
- A designated amount that is placed by the player sitting in the second postition clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt. (Players joining a game in progress must post a Big Blind, but may do so from any position).
- Big Slick
- The name for Ace-King in the hole. Players having that hand are said to be holding Big Slick.
- Blind
- A forced bet made before cards are dealt. Since the bet is made without seeing the cards, it is said to be a "blind" bet.
- Blind Raise
- When a player raises without looking at his hand.
- Bluff
- To make other players believe that one has a better hand than they actually do by betting or raising.
- Boardcards
- The cards that are dealt face-up across the middle of a poker table and are shared amoung the players in comunity card games like Holdem and Omaha.
- Boat
- another term for a full house.
- Bottom Pair
- When a player uses the lowest card on the flop with one of their hole cards to make a pair, it is said to be Bottom Pair.
- Broadway
- An Ace High straight.
- Bring-In
- The forced bet made on the first round of betting by the player who is dealt the lowest card showing in Seven Card Stud and Stud 8 or Better. In Razz it is the highest card showing.
- Bring It In
- To start the betting on the first round.
- Bullets
- A pair of Aces in the hole.
- Bump
- To raise.
- Burn
- In and effort to keep players from seeing the next card in the deck and gaining an unfair advantage, in many live games the dealer discards or "burns" a card before turning over the flop, the turn, and the river cards.
- Button
- The dealer button is a small round disk that is moved from player to player in a clockwise direction following each hand, to theroetically indicate the dealer of each hand.
- Buy
- To "buy" the pot a player makes a bet that is so large no one dares to call it.
- Buy-In
- The minimum amount of money required by a player to sit down in a particular poker game.
C
- Call
- When a player chooses to match the previous bet.
- Calling Station
- A player who tends to call every bet. These players are hard to bluff, but often stay in hands they should have folded.
- Case
- The last remaining card of a certain rank. If there are three Aces on the board, the remaining Ace is the "case ace".
- Chase
- to stay in a hand where you are currently beat in hopes that a card will be dealt to complete your hand. Players betting in hopes of completing straights and flushes are often said to be "chasing".
- Cold Call
- When a player with no money invested in the pot calls a bet and a raise, he is said to be cold calling.
- Come
- A draw. Being "on the come" or having a "come hand" is to have a drawing hand (one that is not yet made, but can be completed with one more card).
- Come Over the Top
- To raise or re-raise an opponent's last bet.
- Connector
- Cards in sequence of rank, like KQ. If they are of the same suited, they are referred to as "suited connectors".
- Cap
- To make the maximum number of bets allowed during a round. If four bets are allowed and four bets are made, the betting has been capped for that round.
- Cardroom
- the room or space in a casino where poker is played.
- Case Chips
- A player's last chips.
- Cash Out
- To leave a game and convert your chips to cash.
- Check
- If no bet has been made before a player's turn to act, they can decide not to bet and still remain in the hand by "checking".
- Check-Raise
- When a player checks and then raises in the same betting round.
- Chop
- To return the blinds to the players who posted them and move on to the next hand if no other players call.
- Collusion
- When two or more players conspire to cheat in a poker game.
- Community Cards
- Cards that are face-up and used by all the players.
- Cowboys
- A pair of Kings.
- Crack
- to beat a hand. For example, if your hole cards are King-King, and you lose the hand, you have had your "pocket kings cracked".
