Poker Tells - Instant Check

Mike Caro is a noted poker author, and his book on Poker Tells is the leading resource on the topic.

This poker tip has to do with gathering information about your opponent's play by observing how they act at the table, especially the manner in which they bet.

Instant Check
Here's a transcript of the video . . .

Now we come to a tell that can easily be worth thousands dollars to you every year, and all you have to do is watch the man with the hat. Now this is draw poker but it applies to other games as well.

Watch the man in the hat, takes three cards, and then what? He checked.

What does that tell us? Now most people don’t see much of a tell here, and that’s because not much happened. But what did happen is very important.

This man took three cards; he looked at them in just a split second, instantly recognized something and checked.

What did he recognize? Well, it wasn’t that he helped his hand; it was that he did NOT help his hand.

How do I know that? Because when a person helps a hand, if you’re drawing to a pair of aces and you make another pair, you have to think for a moment, “Oh my, I now made aces up. What should I do?” And that takes more than a split second.

So when you see this instant check, you know for sure you can safely bet two small pair back into it and make a ton of money. Caro’s Law of Tells #9: If a player looks and then checks instantly, it’s unlikely that he improved his hand.
