Poker Tells - Buying Chips

Mike Caro is a noted poker author, and his book on Poker Tells is the leading resource on the topic.

This poker tip has to do with gathering information about your opponent's play by observing how they act at the table, even before they begin to play cards.

What Did He Say?
Here's a transcript of the video . . .

You should look for tells right from the moment your opponent has bought into the game and begins to play.

WAIT! That's wrong!

You should look for tells right from the moment your opponent actually buys chips.

[Man 1 buying chips]
In this first case we see a man buying chips, but he seems to be almost a little bit embarassed by it. And look at the woman, she's looking at him and saying "What a dork".

[Man 2 buying chips]
But in the second case, this man is flashing his money, and the woman is looking at him, sort of saying "Boy, this guy's a wild guy."

What's the truth about this?

Well, the truth turns out to be pretty much what you'd expect.

[Replay: Man 1 buying chips - sheepishly pulling money from wallet]
This guy is very conservative, he's hiding his money and he's going to play very conservatively.

[Replay: Man 2 buying chips - waving money in air]
But this man, waving his money, is going to play fairly wrecklessly. And he'll bluff more.

Turns out that tell can be worth lots and lots of money, and if you're not watching players buy chips, you missed it.
